NCSA caught up with rising baseball star Matthew Jackson about his high school career and the opportunity to compete at the next level.
NCSA: What motivates you before a big game?
Jackson: Normally before every game I concentrate on the things I need to do in order for us to win. I take control and keep my teammates focused. I see every game as a big game.
NCSA: What are you looking forward to if and when you get the opportunity to play at the collegiate level?
Jackson: I am looking forward to having the experience playing baseball on a collegiate level. I hope to play as much as possible and be a help to the team in anyway. I plan on getting stronger and make my way up to be a leader.
NCSA: Why did you get involved in baseball?
Jackson: I got involved in baseball because my dad was so good and he inspired me to get where I am today. He pushes me to train harder everyday and never misses a game. He played college ball and had a lot going for him but then he got in a bad car accident which ruined his baseball career. I hope to follow in his footsteps and continue where he left off.
NCSA: Tell us about your interactions with college coaches so far.
Jackson: So far my interactions with college coaches are great. I've gotten lots of letters and emails from many different colleges. With every coach that contacts me I check out the school website and their baseball program and then get back to the coach with an email or phone call.
NCSA: How does your team look for this season?
Jackson: Our baseball team hasn't had much success in the past years but this year we hope to change all that. So far we've had a fall ball season through the school and it's gone fairly well. I've won quite a few of games and have come a long way in the past years. Personally, I'm very excited for the upcoming baseball season. It's my senior year and I hope to take control and be the leader and role model for the younger players.
NCSA: What are your goals athletically, academically and in your community for the rest of the school year?
Jackson: This year I decided to play basketball for my school. We have a very good basketball program and I hope to help lead the team to another championship. During the off season for baseball I plan to do lots of training to get ready for the season. I will be doing lots of long toss and running to strengthen my arm. This year I plan to strive academically and focus mainly on getting the grades that will get me into many different colleges.
NCSA: Tell us about what you've learned since being with NCSA.
Jackson: Before I found NCSA I never contacted a college coach or was even contacted by them. I guess I didn't have the nerves to pick up a phone and give the coach a call. That has all changed after being with NCSA. I've gotten phone calls, emails, and many letters from many different colleges. I've learned how to talk to them and not be scared to give a coach a call. I'm very overwhelmed with my experience so far in this recruiting process.
