Matt Holsman is a stud 2B out of powerhouse Stoneman Douglas High School in Coral Springs, FL. This past season, Holsman had a remarkable year both at the plate and in the field. Statistically he accomplished something that very, very few have done at that high of a level within that many innings. In 29 games, which included 161 full innings he had no errors. Nope, this isn’t a misprint. ZERO errors in 161 total innings! At the plate, Holsman finished out the year with a very impressive .402 Batting Average for a team that won their District Championship for the second year in a row. As a result of his great season, he earned Honorable Mention All County as a second baseman and finished in the Sun Sentinel’s Top 20 for Batting Averages. He has ridden the wave of success into the Club Season with the prestigious Florida Bombers. With a current Batting Average of .363 in 91 AB’s and a .975 Fielding Percentage, he is continuing to excel in one of the most talent-rich areas this country has to offer.
From a former middle infielder’s perspective, Holsman is the absolute complete package both at the plate and in the field for a player at his position. He has some of the softest, quickest hands we have seen from a 2B in some time now and has the strong, accurate arm to match. Above all, the most impressive thing about Holsman defensively is just how consistent he is in his approach. From his footwork to his release, everything is where it needs to be rep after rep.
Offensively he is very short and quick to the ball, allowing him to own the inner half of the plate. Holsman also goes the other way with the ball extremely well, and can handle the off-speed pitches on a consistent basis. What distinguishes him from a lot of the other very good hitters is that he understands his capabilities and stays within them. He knows he isn’t up there to try and hit the ball out of the park, and even though he has experienced tremendous success at the plate and has shown that he can handle some of the better pitching in this country, he stays true to his short quick swing and doesn’t permit himself to cheat and open up too early.
For as good of a baseball player he is, Holsman is a remarkable young man who comes from a great family. Both Barry and Bonnie Holsman are knowledgeable of the game and want nothing but the best overall fit for him in his search for a collegiate home.
