Being a proactive student-athlete is very important in the recruiting process. It's a great way to touch base with the schools you have interest in and helps you to get your name out to college coaches. There are several important steps to take when being proactive.
Most student-athletes decide to email or write a letter to the coaching staff to express his or her interest in a particular school. The best way to touch base with college coaches is by telephone. By picking up the phone and calling coaches, you are using a more personal touch that will allow you to speak to someone on a more personal level. Also, as a student-athlete, you want to make sure you are including all of the vital information to a college coach. Granted, most college coaches will take the lead in the conversation, but it always helps to be fully prepared for the questions that may be asked. For example, make sure you know all of your athletic and academic accomplishments, you have a copy of one of your best game films, and you have a copy of your high school varsity and/or AAU schedule. Make sure to offer the last two items mentioned even if the coach doesn't ask for either of them.
As a student-athlete who is working to make the proper connections with college coaches, you are taking a great interest in your future. You don't have to sit back and wait for coaches to contact you, because you can make the initial contact. This approach could lead to the scholarship offer you have been wanting so don't wait any longer.
