It is important for each student-athlete to find the right fit, but finding that fit is not always easy and does not necessarily happen in the timeline student-athletes hope for. Many student-athletes become discouraged if they have not found what they are looking for in November, but it’s important to remember that there is a long road ahead.
Many student-athletes commit to a particular college or university and sign their national letter-of-intent (NLI) during the early signing period. Those student-athletes have been fortunate enough to verbally commit early on and the college or university recruiting him or her believes they have found the ideal student-athlete for their particular program. The early signing periods for men’s and women’s basketball lasted for only one week in November.
Many student-athletes have not found exactly what they’re looking for yet, and for these prospects the college search continues. Individuals in this situation must continue to take visits, research colleges and universities and communicate with college coaches. The regular signing period gives high school seniors the opportunity to continue their quest for the perfect college match. The regular signing period for men’s and women’s basketball lasts from April 16 through May 21.
Continue to be proactive and do your part in order to find the right situation. If you put in the effort, the right fit will be waiting around the corner!
