December and January are some very key months for any high school student-athlete, but especially for cross country and distance runners in track. These two months are when cross country/distance runners recuperate from the cross country season and then start to prepare for the indoor track season. It is also a very important time for recruiting.
These two months are pivotal whether you are a freshman, sophomore, or junior but especially if you are a senior. If you are still looking to find a college/university with the right academic and athletic fit than this time period is crucial for you. These two months are going to be the most down time you are going to have for a long time! You will be returning from Christmas vacation and will primarily focus on distance runs. It is also down time for college coaches. This is the time period right before the college season really kicks in.
Take advantage of this slow season and begin to research colleges and universities. Make sure the colleges have your major, the campus fits you, and check rosters to make sure your times measure up. You should also contact college coaches and introducing yourself. Now is NOT the time to be bashful. Call college coaches and if you do not get through once try again. Persistence will give you a shot to find a program that really wants you which will ensure an enjoyable and prosperous college career.
