NCSA caught up with football standout Tommy Edwards to talk about his high school career and the opportunity to compete at the college level.
NCSA: What motivates you before a big game? What are your pre-game rituals?
Edwards: The excitement of Friday night lights, playing for my school and the competition all motivate me before the big game. As a team we go to mass, eat dinner and have a walk through. Individually, I don't say much, I constantly think of what I have to do to be successful and help the team win.
NCSA: What are you looking forward to if and when you get the opportunity to play college football?
Edwards: I want to continue playing football for as long as I can and look forward to playing on a bigger scale in college. I also want to meet knew people and play in different venues.
NCSA: Why did you get involved in football?
Edwards: I switched from playing soccer to playing football when I was nine because it is my favorite sport. I feel that it is bigger than any other sport. I always heard my older brother talking about how much he enjoyed playing football at Notre Dame and I wanted to be apart of it.
NCSA: Tell us about your interactions with college coaches so far.
Edwards: I have heard from various coaches but so far no offers. I hope to change this in the future.
NCSA: How did your team do last season?
Edwards: My team finished 8-3 and made it to the playoffs. We play in division in 1 which is the toughest division in California. We look to improve upon this record and win a state championship next season.
NCSA: What are your goals - athletically, academically and in your community - for the rest of the school year and the summer?
Edwards: I want to continue my strength training in the weight room, my speed on the track, and work on the mental aspect of the game. I currently have a 3.3 GPA and want to improve this by the end of the year. I look forward to working at a sports camp over the summer and providing kids with a fun look at sports.
NCSA: Tell us about what you've learned since being with NCSA.
Edwards: I have learned that there are hundreds of schools with good football programs that are not necessarily Division 1. I believe that there is a school out there for me.
