Choosing the right summer camp can be an extremely hard decision in the recruiting process. It is exceedingly hard to separate camp materials from coaches that are actively recruiting you from others that are probably looking increase the size of their camp roster (and money in their pockets).
It is very important that you choose the right camp. You should consider whether or not the coaching staff is going to evaluate you during the camp. Being "discovered" at a Division 1 college camp is so rare that athletes can't afford to waste an opportunity to go to a camp where they have a realistic chance of being recruited. If you are attending a camp in the hopes of boosting your chances of playing for that particular school, it is important to understand if that school is actively recruiting you.
Often times this comes down to the simple questions like:
- Has a coach from that school called you and specifically invited you to the camp?
- Have you had any face to face contact?
It can be enticing to attend a large Division 1 camp, but keep in mind that many smaller Division 2 and 3 colleges/universities provide camps with a better coach to player ratio, increasing your probability of improving. Also keep in mind that your high school coach may be able to help point you toward some great camps in your area.
Choosing the RIGHT camp will improve your recruiting and your skills!
