I have no idea what typical 12-year-old girls do with their summer vacations, but I imagine it involves a lot of Britney Spears and text messaging.
Alexis Thompson is not a typical 12-year-old girl, and she's doing something atypical with her summer vacation: She's playing in the U.S. Open.
Thompson, the youngest qualifier in tournament history, last week shot 72 and 71 at the age of 12 years, four months. Before Thompson, the youngest Open qualifier was Morgan Pressel, who was more than seven months older when she made it in 2001.
"If I make the cut, that would be awesome," Thompson said, "but I just want to do good."
