2009 NCSA Collegiate Power Rankings

James Madison University > JMU TOP-RATED DIVISION I-AA PUBLIC PROGRAM IN NCSA SURVEY

July 26, 2004

HARRISONBURG (7/26/04) - James Madison University has the top-ranked athletics program among Division I-AA public institutions in a recent National Collegiate Scouting Association survey that combines the categories of competitive accomplishments, rankings by US News & World Report, and student-athlete graduation rates.

The NCSA Power Rank assigned a numerical value for each of three categories - a program's ranking in the Sears Cup standings (competitive success), the institution's ranking among its peers by US News & World Report, and the institution's ranking nationally among schools in all divisions (Division I, Division II, Division III) for student-athlete gradation success.

According to the survey, JMU ranked 28th among approximately 120 Division I-AA programs in the Sears Cup standings, third among peer institutions by US News & World Report, and 128th in graduation success.

Among all Division I-AA programs, JMU ranked 16th.

Each of four top-ranked Division I-AA programs in the survey is from an Ivy League institution with Harvard ranked first, Princeton second, Yale third and Dartmouth fourth. JMU was ranked third among the 12 members of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference with private institutions Villanova and Richmond placing fifth and ninth, respectively.

The remainder of NCSA's top 25 Division I-AA programs included Brown sixth, Georgetown seventh, Pennsylvania eighth, Cornell 10th, Butler 11th, Columbia 12th, Holy Cross 13th, Bucknell 14th, Lehigh 15th, Marist 17th, New Hampshire 18th, Maine 19th, Eastern Illinois 20th, Dayton 21st, The Citadel 22nd, Furman 23rd, Massachusetts 24th, and Appalachian State 25th.
