NCSA caught up with rising soccer star Philip Suprise about his high school career and the opportunity to compete at the college level.
NCSA: What motivates you before a big game? What’s your pre-game ritual(s)?
Suprise: Before a game I like to kick the ball around and talk with my team mates about things that are going on. I also drink a can of pineapple juice before every match.
NCSA: What are you looking forward to if and when you get the opportunity to play on a collegiate level?
Suprise: I am looking forward to compete at the highest level of soccer in college. I am really excited to focus my academics in the medical field while still being able to play soccer.
NCSA: Why did you get involved in the sports you played in? (Is it a family tradition, do you admire an athlete in the sport)?
Suprise: My parents said I started kicking a ball around the house as soon as I could walk! I always watched my dad play soccer when I was young. I started playing club soccer in kindergarten. My favorite player is Owen Hargreaves. I was able to watch him play in a Bayern Munich league game.
NCSA: Tell us about your interactions with college coaches so far.
Suprise: I am getting a lot of letters from all over the country. It is informative to learn about all of the different colleges and what they offer. I spend time reading about their academic and soccer programs.
NCSA: How are your team(s) doing so far?
Suprise: My club team won state cup last year and we took 2nd place this year. My high school team is very good. We are currently ranked #4. As a team, we are working hard toward a state championship. My high school team has many of my club team mates so we are able to train year round together.
NCSA: What are your goals – athletically, academically and in your community – for the rest of the school year?
Suprise: I am working very hard to maintain my high grade point average. I have a tough course load this year! I plan to continue my weight lifting routine to add more strength. I am always working at improving my technical skills and speed of play. I am currently focusing on more ways that I can contribute to my community. I have also committed to volunteering at several charitable events.
