NCSA caught up with soccer standout Katie Van Aken about her high school career and the opportunity to compete at the college level.
NCSA: What motivates you before a big game? What’s your pre-game ritual(s)?
Van Aken: I don’t really have a pre-game ritual but I do focus myself onto soccer and try to forget all the other things like school and friends for the game. I also think about something I am going to challenge myself to do during the game like go after every header or never let the ball bounce in front of me.
NCSA: What are you looking forward to if and when you get the opportunity to play on a collegiate level?
Van Aken: I am definitely looking forward to taking my game to the next level. I remember going to see college teams play when I was little and dreaming of playing like them someday. That time is finally here and I am ready to play at that level.
NCSA: Why did you get involved in the sports you played in?
Van Aken: Basically, I can thank my parents for my involvement in sports. They encouraged me to try everything I wanted when I was little. So, as soon as I stepped onto the soccer field at age six, I loved the sport.
NCSA: Tell us about your interactions with college coaches so far.
Van Aken: I am happy with the interest that colleges show in me as a player and also as a good student-athlete as well.
NCSA: How are your team(s) doing so far? (Club teams, high school teams)? Any challenges this season? How are you excelling personally, how does that compare to previous years?
Van Aken: My club team came in 1st place this year and we will be playing in the elite division next year. Personally, I am focusing on bettering my game on my own time. This year I am spending more time working on technical skills and basics so that they show in my overall play.
NCSA: Tell us about what you’ve learned since being with NCSA.
Van Aken: I learned a lot about how to talk with coaches. The biggest take-away I would say is the ability to promote myself and show the positive characteristics that I know I have to other people. I will be able to use that skill later in life as well.
