NCSA caught up with rising softball star Kelsee Blackwell about her high school career and the opportunity to compete at the next level.
NCSA: What motivates you before a big game?
Blackwell: Since I am a pitcher, I start with my warm-up routine a little later than the rest of the team. While sitting in the dugout, I have my IPod listening to Armor For Sleep or Atreyu before games. I never go out between the lines until after the game officially starts.
NCSA: What are you looking forward to if and when you get the opportunity to play at the collegiate level?
Blackwell: I want to take my pitching to the next level and to further my education. I also would like a change of scenery, meet people from different regions of the United States, or even the world.
NCSA: Why did you get involved in softball?
Blackwell: I started playing sports because I got jealous of my older brother getting to play. I wanted to be out there too.
NCSA: Tell us about your interactions with college coaches so far.
Blackwell: I have had the opportunity to talk to many college coaches so far. It is interesting to listen to them answer the question "what type of coach they are" and compare their answer to their players’ opinions. I have received various types of letters from a lot of colleges. I live in the Midwest and most of the letters I have received have been from this region, but I have also received quite a few letters from colleges in the southwest.
NCSA: How does your team look for this season?
Blackwell: My high school team is enjoying their best start in at least 15 years at 10 wins and 2 defeats. This team is trying to stay focused on our preseason goal of winning a sectional title. During the off season, if there is one, I worked hard on continuing to develop my pitches and pitching style. At this part in our season I have an ERA of below 1, average just under 2 strikeouts per inning and I have 2 no hitters.
NCSA: What are your goals athletically, academically and in your community for the rest of the school year?
Blackwell: I would like to lead my team to a sectional championship for the first time in 17 years. It is also important to me to stay on the Honor Roll and keep doing my volunteer work. In the summer I want to play against the best players that I can, which will help me be a better pitcher.
