Grand Forks Red River's Liza Wischer defeated teammate Callie Ronkowski 6-2, 6-4 to win the North Dakota state girls tennis singles championship.
A lone state title would have been a big accomplishment for the senior, but for Wischer, it was the final chapter in the most prolific prep tennis career in the history of the state.
Wischer's victory gave her an unprecedented sixth state singles title and pushed her career singles record to 129-0.
She said she was thrilled and relieved following the win.
"I'm excited about it," she said. "I can't believe it's over."
Wischer said it was difficult to put her feat in a historical perspective, but hinted that her most remarkable career achievements may have been during her junior high years.
"Looking back and seeing the seventh- and eighth-graders, I can't believe I was that young when I won it," she said.
Wischer said she is ready to start the next chapter of her life, which will include playing tennis at Iowa State.
"I'm excited," she said. "You can't be in high school forever."
