April 2009 Impact Athlete of the Month

Martina Shorkey, 5’2” senior team captain of the St. Aquinas women’s water polo team of Hollywood, FL is the NCSA Water Polo Impact Player of the Month. She is currently weighing her options between Siena College (NY), Hartwick College (NY), and George Washington University (DC).
A little more than halfway through her senior season, Martina has maintained her status as a team leader in all offensive categories and focuses her efforts on guiding her team’s offense. Jim Varsallon of the Miami Herald is quoted as saying Martina is “the best player in the water”, a leader of a young team.
It also doesn’t hurt that Martina carries a 4.822/5.0 GPA, 1200 (2-part) SAT score, and is also a member of the business club, whose duties require her to be present for activities before school even starts for the day. Those factors, combined with her athleticism and drive, are about to earn her a spot on a Division I program next spring.
We wish Martina luck next year and look forward to hearing about how she impacts her new team!
