Prospective wrestling recruits should have experience in all styles of wrestling and compete against quality competition on a regular basis. Typically, the best wrestlers in Folkstyle are also some of the best wrestlers in Greco and Freestyle.
College coaches recruit student-athletes who can make an immediate impact at the collegiate level. Coaches look for student-athletes who have wrestled more than just Folkstyle during their high school seasons. It is difficult for wrestling coaches to scout prospects during the high school season because the college and high school seasons coincide. It is more likely to be scouted at AAU tournaments where coaches have more free time and can assess prospects against quality competition.
Most AAU tournaments draw talented wrestlers, and student-athletes should always notify college coaches prior to attending a tournament. College coaches will evaluate many wrestlers in one weekend, and may make important recruiting decisions based on what they see at a tournament. Wrestlers should always follow up with coaches after a tournament weekend to seek feedback and constructive criticism.
The best AAU tournaments offer Greco and Freestyle competitions as well as Folkstyle. These venues provide the opportunity to wrestle against quality competition, receive exposure and gain valuable experience in the process. Greco and Freestyle are very easy to learn and will help high school wrestlers advance to the next level.
