Isn't it nice as distance runners to finally get some nice weather to run in? Of course it is. Mid-April to mid-May marks an exciting and important time for distance runners to make some headway.
That headway is of course with racing, but also with college and recruiting. This time of year marks a time of dual meets, Saturday invites and post-season races. The weather is getting nicer and this tends to be the time where PRs happen and confidence grows. This is time where you really need to keep the focus and continue to do the little things. Stretch before and after each run, eat and drink healthy and get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Those little things are going to help you get those PRs you want and ultimately can mean the difference of being recruited by a few college coaches or many college coaches.
By taking the proper steps to take care of yourself you will further insure that your body is healthy and prepared to make big strides in your racing. Also consider that college cross country and recruiting for college cross country is competitive. Doing the little things on a daily basis will give you an edge. Your edge carries over in the classroom. Do your homework, study a little harder for a test. Every ounce of energy you pour into your academics can equal higher grades which could eventually be the difference between getting into a certain college or not. In terms of recruiting, respond to every college coach who sends you information, and take the initiative to email or call a college coach and introduce yourself.
The name of the game is to do the little things well and to do something that will make you stand out in positive way.
