The transition from high school to college field hockey is an exciting one. Not only does the competition become stronger and more focused in college, but college athletics also offers a great deal of opportunity for those who participate.
In addition to the numerous resources offered by universities, student-athletes tend to receive some added academic perks. It is important to take full advantage of these opportunities whenever possible. As important as college athletics may be, when it comes down to it, only 2-3% of ALL college athletes continue on to the professional level, which should be an incentive for athletes to use what is given to them to focus on their academics (collegetips.com). That’s not to say that athletes should hold back on their athletic goals, but instead, they should push themselves in all situations, athletically and academically. Using the tips below can make a huge difference in a student-athlete’s academic performance and make their athletic season more manageable.
1. Study Hours: More often than not, your university will provide your team with designated study hours to help you make time for your studies and manage your time. Although you may be studying with your teammates, remember that getting homework done in study hours allows you to hang out with your friends later. Actually study during study hours, bottom line.
2. Courses: Even with study hours, coursework can become more consuming. Instead of taking a large amount of credit hours in-season, load up on classes during the off-season so you have more time to focus and excel athletically and academically. While in season, athletes are tested by constant travel and training. Taking it easier in-season, the sport will easily compensate for the course.
3. Choose your courses wisely: When you are deciding which classes to take, chooses courses that you will enjoy and that will help you toward your degree in the long run.
4. Tutors: If the courses you choose become too difficult or you are having a hard time keeping up because of your athletic commitment, take advantage of the tutoring services offered by your university.
