Ryan Young - Whitworth College
The work I put into the process to be successful was fairly simple. First I truthfully assessed my playing ability and determined which colleges I needed to focus on. I was about a DII-DIII type of recruit, with maybe the potential to play in DI-AA colleges. So I found which of these division schools had the major I wanted (Landscape Architecture) or majors that would help me get into grad school, and emailed/filled out recruiting forms to all the coaches of these schools.
Also, either with these initial contacts or after I got a reply back, I would have NCSA send them my Scouting Report. Then if the coaches liked what they saw they would continue contacts with me and try and set up visit dates.
Be realistic in your playing ability and where you have a chance to play. Unless a major DI college coach has already personally contacted you, you probably don't have a chance to get into those schools. Focus on lower division schools that have quality winning programs, where you will be able to play a lot and improve!
It is amazing being a college athlete! I love the fact that I get to travel and represent my school in competitions. It gives me a sense of pride and importance.
