Personal Statement

CHARACTER BEFORE SKILL

As a young adult, exploring opportunities for college and with my desire to play softball at the college level, I’m learning that discipline and dedication are more important now as ever before.   Searching for a school that is a fit for me is a process that requires both.

I desire to attend a school that has two key components – my desired field of study and a competitive softball program.

My personal goals are supported by my beliefs.  As a Christian I try to allow my beliefs to back all that I do.  I’m committed to being the best person I can be and strive to consistently operate with a high level of integrity.  At times it is difficult and I struggle, but I understand the importance of pushing through adversity and becoming better and smarter as a result.  In terms of my personal goals, I intend to use my college years to grow in independence, responsibility and prepare for the next chapter of my life.

As an athlete, I’ve been blessed to play at a high level of competition for many years. These opportunities have challenged and grown my skills and I have learned to appreciate this benefit.  I’m a hard worker and don’t back down from a challenge.  I’m respectful and believe I have a good understanding of leadership and its place in growing me.  I am a team player and feel this might be my greatest asset.  If I’m struggling, I believe it shouldn’t be visible or affect others.  Frequently, my teammates lean on me to pull them up and increase their confidence when they are struggling.

In terms of my academic goals, it closely resembles my needs and focus with athletics.  I am a hard worker.  I challenge myself and am currently taking four honors classes.  I have to work hard to keep the grades I keep and I am working hard to do better.  Managing my academics with my athletic commitments is an example of my commitment level and willingness to be challenged and I currently am able to uphold a better than average GPA.

I believe I am a well-rounded student athlete and look forward to finding the fit for my collegiate life.

  • 2014 Team FLA (U18 Gold)
  • Reed played for Team FLA Gold U18 from January 2014 - August 30th, 2014. It was great being part of Team FLA as we participated in all ASA U18 Gold Qualifiers and also played against the best talent in the country at the Louisville Slugger Independence Tourney in Boulder, Colorado. We also played in Irvine, CA at the PGF National Tournament and participated at the Atlanta Legacy Tournament in late July prior to Nationals. Finally, in March of 2014 we were able to play two scrimmages against the Netherlands National Softball team. It was great experience playing against professional and college softball players at that level. It was a great season but we had to make a move because the travel became challenging from a financial perspective. Reed enjoyed playing for Team FLA and coach Linda Derk.
  • 2013 Lutz Lightning (U16 ASA )
  • Finished the season with 41 wins and 28 losses. Also, won three NSA tournaments and participated in the U16 ASA qualifiers in 2013.
  • 2012 Tampa Mustangs (U14 ASA Ryan)
  • Finished 32 out of 114 teams at 2012 ASA National Tournament, Sioux Falls, SD. Won 4 and loss 2 at ASA Nationals. Reed was on the Mustangs from December 2011 through August 15, 2012. The Mustangs-Ryan 2012 finished with a record of 50 wins and 15 losses. They qualified for ASA Nationals in June 2012, finished 1st place in five tournaments and 3 times finished second place. The tournaments included majority of ASA qualifiers, showcase events and NSA tournaments.
  • 2011 New Tampa Predators FL (U14)
  • New Tampa Predators played NSA and ASA tournaments in the U14 and U16 division. We finished the season with a 35 wins and 20 losses.
  • 2010 New Tampa All Stars 2010 (U12)
  • 2010 Florida State Champions; Runner Up Southeast Regionals. 2010 was a great run for these ladies. They came up one win away from making it to the Little League World Series in Oregon. They finished the All Star Season with 15 wins and 2 losses. They lost in the Regional finals to Warner Robbins, GA who was the eventual Little League World Champions in 2009 and 2010. New Tampa All Stars finished as the 2010 Florida State Champions, Section 4 champs and District 25 Champs in 2010. It was an awesome run and great memories.
  • 2010 New Tampa Predators FL (U14)
  • The New Tampa Predators played together from January 2010 to December 2010. There was a small break in the season as this group also played together from June 2010 through August 2010 when they played as the New Tampa All Stars and became state Champs and were one game away from making it to the Little League World Series in 2010. They lost to the Georgia team who won the Little League World Series for a second straight season in 2010.
  • 2009 New Tampa Predators FL (U12)
  • The New Tampa Predators were one of the top U12 teams in West side of Florida in 2009. We finished the season with an incredible record of 71 wins, 23 losses and 1 tie. We ended up winning 8 tournaments and finishing second three additional times. It was a great season from January 2009 through December 2009.
