You are probably wondering what this home-schooled girl, playing on a small rural school team, can bring to your team? My greatest strengths are playing wherever the team needs me, a strong throwing arm with long distance and accuracy, a “good eye” when batting, and switch hitting. I am willing to go that extra mile in training to fulfill the needs of the team. My experience playing ball started in the first grade as a member on a boys’ T-ball team. From that day forward, I have played slow pitch and fast pitch softball every year. My early years found me playing on a Canadian girls’ slow pitch team as a catcher. In the fourth grade, I started playing all positions on a Little League team in Curlew, WA, a very small rural community with limited athletic activities for girls. I qualified to play high school varsity softball as an eighth grader and have been on the varsity team ever since, lettering the past three years. Initially, the coach had me playing left and center fields due to my throwing ability (center to home without a cut off), moving me between positions when necessary due to the opposing team’s batting history. In order to improve my contribution to the team, I attended Central Washington University Softball Camps during the summers and taught myself how to switch hit at bat. This effort paid off as I had the highest batting average (.423) and on-base percentage (.594) on the team this season. This season I played predominantly at first base. However, being a utility player, the coach would move me to other positions if there was a need due to team injuries or needed coverage for opposing teams’ strengths.
During my freshman year of high school, I attended Curlew High School. It was not a good year for me academically or socially due to bullying from some of the students. I enrolled in Alpha Omega Christian Academy (an accredited on-line school) beginning my sophomore year. Since attending Alpha Omega Academy, my grades have steadily improved. My GPA at Alpha Omega Academy is a 3.07. However, when my freshman year courses are factored in with the Alpha Omega Academy courses my GPA drops to a 2.83. My softball ethic of applying effort to succeed has carried over to my home-schooling experience. I fully anticipate increasing my GPA during my senior year.
In addition to softball and school, I have been running my own business for the past five years. I supply kindling to the local general store and firewood to some private customers. When a tornado devastated Henryville, Indiana, a few years ago, I donated my entire earnings from my business to the Henryville School District to help them buy supplies for the affected students. I felt that this was the least I could do to help their community recover from the disaster.
