I learned early on that nobody could decide my potential except for me. At 10 years old, a softball coach told me that I'd never make it. The next year I made a very good 12u team as the very worst 11u player on the team. I went to every practice and worked hard to learn. I went to every optional practice and clinic that was offered. I went from non-starter, to right fielder to 2nd baseman, to being asked to return the following year. I learned that hard work is how you get where you want to go. I'm still like that today. If warm ups are an hour before the game, I try to get someone there with me an extra 30 minutes early to help me work on whatever I think I can improve on.
That 10u coach actually set me on my career path. I became interested in how and why certain things worked or didn't work. I became interested in learning the game (any game I played). I also learned that when you put everything into playing, it inspires others to give their all. Now I help coach a 10u softball team. I know that I am meant to work with kids and in sports. I'm sure I will be a great teacher and I know I want to keep coaching as well as playing. I am also thinking about a career in photography. I will bring that work ethic, and that drive to always improve so I can help the team, to my future college softball program.
