Personal Statement

My name is Tiffany White. I am a senior at William Allen High School in Allentown, PA, where I have been a varsity starter for three years and where I am looking forward to this spring as a co-captain of my team. I am interested in attending an academically and athletically selective college beginning in the fall of 2013 and playing varsity softball at the D-I, D-II or D-III level for a winning program where I can make an impact right away. I am an excellent student, an experienced softball player, and a proven leader. I can play any position, including pitcher if needed, and I think I can contribute to a program right away, particularly as an outfielder, infielder, pitcher, or utility player who has strong fundamental skills at every defensive position and as a switch hitter with some speed and power from both sides of the plate. I am a natural right handed hitter, but I can hit, slap and bunt from the left side as well, so I can hit anywhere in the lineup. Although I am usually not the fastest player on my team, I have good quickness and speed on the field and on the bases, I know how to get on base, and I love to run the bases. What I am looking for in a college is a great school which has an excellent reputation for both academics and athletics, preferably located on a beautiful closed campus with attractive buildings and plenty of open green space in a suburban setting somewhere in the Northeast (preferably in Pennsylvania, New York or New England), where I will have the opportunity to study my chosen major or design my own major and where I will have the flexibility to take a variety of courses and study abroad (most likely during the summer), where the students are challenged but happy, and where the school has a strong softball program where I can play right away. I suppose what I am really looking for is the best fit for me - both academically and athletically - and the chance to continue playing the sport I love for four more years. At this time, I plan to major in business - with a concentration in marketing - and minor in studio art and take most of my courses in those areas; however, I also plan to take other courses in the liberal arts and other areas that interest me, including entrepreneurship and international business. I believe that I have what it takes to succeed at a top-level college or university, both academically and athletically, based upon my past success in the classroom and on the field and because of my desire to excel in whatever I do. Please don't be fooled by my small size and my easy-going nature; although I am only 5'3" tall and 130 pounds and most of the people who know me would say that I am a nice and happy person, I am a tough competitor, and I play to win! Because I play multiple sports, I cross-train year 'round, and I also do sport-specific training for each sport I play to improve my skills in each sport, so I am always in shape and ready for the season when it is time to play. Atlhough I play multiple sports and I like them all, softball is my passion, and I can't wait to get back out on the field each spring. In addition to being a good student, I also am active in my community and in my school, and I hold several key leadership positions because I do not believe in just joining a group to become a member; if I join a group, I want to be active in it and make a difference. I really do believe the saying that people should either lead, follow, or get out of the way! During my first three plus years of high school, I have participated in five different sports (four of them varsity, including softball), and I have already earned a total of 12 varsity letters (4 for field hockey, 2 for cross country, 3 for swimming, and 3 for softball) so far. During my freshman year, I also played freshman girls basketball, and this spring I hope to also throw the javelin on my high school track and field team. This past spring, I was recognized by my high school coaches as Softball Player of the Year for my school. In addition, I was named to our All Conference Field Hockey team in both my junior and senior years as an honorable mention selection (equivalent to second team in other conferences) and to our local newspaper's All-Area Field Hockey Team, also as an honorable mention selection, and as my school's and my conference Scholar-Athlete for field hockey as a senior. At this point, I have narrowed my choices to six schools where I am most interested in attending and playing softball, but I remain open to considering any school where I would be a good fit academically and athletically and where I could contribute right away to a successful softball program. I look forward to hearing from you and - I hope - to meeting you sometime in the near future (if I have not already done so by the time you read this). Good luck to you and your team this spring. Don't forget to check out my video. Sincerely, Tiffany White (#13)
