Personal Statement
Sports have always played a major role in my life. And, while I have played many, I am most passionate about basketball. Since I was 5 playing for the YMCA, I have reveled in the excitement of the game and being part of a team. It has become my outlet in life not only during games but also in the hours spent practicing in the gym and at home.
Although I was big on the soccer field, I am “undersized” in basketball. I know I have to work harder than taller players to earn my minutes and this has fueled my off-court workouts and my on-court presence. They say you can’t coach size but you can’t coach heart either. Rebounds and defense aren’t about size they’re about heart. I generally am assigned the best opposing player and, with rare exceptions, always outscore my mark while hardly ever giving up offensive rebounds. I have always been willing to do whatever it takes to help my team win on both ends of the court whether it be scoring, stopping somebody from scoring or both. My philosophy is not that I have to score 30 points to win, just 1 more than my mark. If my whole team does this, we will never lose. It is my goal to play college basketball but in the event that I do not play for a college team, I know that I will continue to play, seeking out others who love this sport as much as I do.
