Personal Statement
Hello my name is Amayha Dycus. I am currently a Senior at Edwardsville High School. I was a three sport varsity athlete both my freshmen and sophomore years. Sports have really made in impact in life, not just on the court/field but in school also. Sports have taught me time management, responsibility, leadership, teamwork, dedication and commitment, and most of all to believe in myself. I want to go to a college that is not only athletically great but also academically great too.
I have played sports all my life. My primary sport is basketball and my secondary sport is softball. My freshmen year I got to experience playing with Edwardsville Tigers Basketball team in the championship game at states, were we took second place. During my sophomore year, I moved from Illinois to Hawaii because of my father's job. I ended up making the varsity basketball team as the starting point guard. Everyday I worked harder and harder to better myself and teammates for our chance to make it to states. That year we made it to OIA playoffs and fell short to Kaimuki by 4 points. I received honorable mention and was ranked sixth for number of points scored throughout the season in the Red West division.
I have also been a varsity starter for softball. I started third base for the Kapolei Hurricanes. After having a rough season, we came in second place for the OIA Championship game. During states I received most valuable player, hitting two doubles and scoring three of the runs. I also played with the Hawaii Pearls and won the Hawaii States U16 title and came second to Hawaii Gold in the Hawaii Invitational.
As of right now, I have maintained a GPA of 3.6 or higher throughout my freshmen, sophomore and junior year. I am currently doing my health fair project which pertains to childhood blindness. With this, I have created a game that is/was physically impossible for blind children to play and made possible for them to play. The game is all about sight and aiming skills but I took a sense that a blind child uses a lot of which is hearing and made it into a hearing game.
In the process of furthering my future, not only do I anticipate on playing basketball and/or softball at a collegiate level. I am also looking forward to studying in Sports medicine or Pediatrics.
