Personal Statement
I have been playing basketball since the fourth grade. It was at first, just a sport I tried out for. Little did I know it would become something I'm most passionate about. From fourth grade to eighth grade, I have been a starter. When I entered high school, I was a starting guard for junior varsity for about two games. I was one of the captains for the JV team. I then earned a spot on the varsity bench where I received some playing time and even started a few games. Going into my Sophomore year, I was playing strictly varsity. I started every game and was even co-captain for the team.
My main goal is to play college basketball and obtain a Masters degree. I was always told that, higher education will get you far in life. I am aiming to receive the Gates Millenium Scholarship. Education is key and I'm determined to go to college. Another goal would be to provide hope for Native Americans and be a role model or inspiration. Being Native American, the odds are stacked against us and I want Natives to see all the opportunities that are available. I refuse to be just another statistic. Therefore; I feel that I have to make it to college to give others the aspiration to do so also.
I want to give back to my community in some way. That is why I am apart of a suicide prevention group. On our reservation, the suicide rates are sky high, but I want to make a difference. I hope in the future that our tribe builds a recreational center so the youth can have a place to go and workout or just hangout. It will also prevent them from getting into trouble or could be what keeps them from ending their lives.
I believe what sets me apart from everyone else is, the determination and desire I have for the sport I love. I am a very hard worker. Once I start something, I don't quit till the jobs done. When I set my mind to something, I'm going to do it, and I'm going to succeed. I am very self-disciplined. I have been attending a summer program for the past three summers that prepares you for college. It allows you to stay in college dorm, take up-coming high school courses in a college classroom, and lets you basically live the life of a college student for six weeks. This program has definitely taught me responsibility and discipline.
