Growing up my dad always told me "Torrey you have really good leadership skills." I never payed much attention to his repetitive statement until I looked back at all my past accomplishments. I perform in my church choir and praise dance team in middle school, by high school I was choreographer for the Praise Team. My freshman year of high school I was a member of the African American Association and by my sophomore year I was president and changed the club name to the Black Student Union. Within the BSU, I started a step team called Silver Lace Steppers. Three close friends of mine, who were also members of BSU, and I performed in our school pep assembly and at the Dunn Bar Center for Black History Month.
The following year many boys and girls wanted to be on the step team. We continued performing at school assemblies, the Dunn Bar Center, and MLK Day at Reid Park. In the process of maintaining a C average, golfing, running BSU and Silver Lace Steppers, I came up with the idea to have an assembly at IRHS for Black History Month. After getting the approval from Student Government and Administration, having various meetings, and making the right phone calls, we pulled off the Black History Month Assembly and manages to get Freedom Rider, Jim Zwerg, as the guest speaker. Not to mention I was working around a 5-6 day a week for IRHS Girl's Golf Season. Juggling everything was tough but I did manage to qualify all three year for the AIA Girl Golf State Tournament. I just qualified last Monday, October 20th, for the State tournament this year. I've been invited to numerous golf invitational tournaments around the country and around the world. I was also award the Citizenship Award in 2012 by the Western States Golf Association at the Annual Allan Bennett Junior Golf Event. Earlier that year I was featured in the African American Golfer's Digest Online Magazine, as Golfer of the Week.
After realizing all my successes I began thinking I would go ahead do what I love as a career; which is being a business owner and leading people. Junior year I took a marketing class in hopes of learning what it takes to run and maintain a business. After enjoying a year of that course I decided to take a Career Internship class my senior year. I'm currently working as the Owner's Assistant of Planet Smoothie Arizona. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I've only been working for Michelle Williams, CEO of Planet Smoothie, since August of this year and she has already exposed me to the behind the scene, reality, and benefits of being a business owner. She's inspired me to take action on whatever I want in life now. She told me "Don't wait to not fail... Take action now and fail forward." Which is exactly why I'm more focused than I've ever been on school work and grades and have been working my hardest when it comes to golf. I know that those two things will help me get closer to my dream of being an entrepreneur. I realize my GPA isn't the best but I'm willing to prove that I am a good dependable student and I'm willing to work raise my overall GPA.
College is going to be such a fun experience for me due to the fact that I'm going to better me for my future and there's always going to be something to keep me productive and busy; whether it be homework, studying, class, golf, community service, or AKA Sorority activities. At the end of the day I just want to be successful, be able to motivate and support my family, live a happy life, and live well enough to give back to those who are less fortunate than I am.
