Personal Statement

My name is Sarah Greenberg, and I am entering my senior year at Great Oak High School. It wasn’t until last spring that I chose to pursue the path of college golf. For 10 years and 12 seasons, I had been devoted to soccer, and 5 of which I had also been involved in competition dance. But I finally made the decision to dedicate my time and focus to golf.

I began taking lessons at Redhawk Golf Course at age 10 from my personal coach, Steve Adamiak, without whom I would not be the golfer I am today. I played on the Varsity Girl’s Golf Team both my freshman and sophomore years in the #7 position. I played in my first competitive golf match my freshman season, and I averaged a 53 with my lowest 9 hole score being 48. Sophomore season, my average dropped 6 strokes to a 47 and my lowest 9 hole score was a 42 at a Palm Springs Invitational. That year, I was also able to play in the two most important league matches of the season against our rival team, Vista Murrieta.

I have been playing in a local club, Valley Junior Golf Association (VJGA), run by Lou and Valerie Skovron, since the 2nd semester of my freshman year. At the end of my sophomore year, it became clear to me that my greatest desire was to become one of the top six on the varsity team and was determined to see my scores drop over the summer. And that I did. In mid-July, I shot my career low for 18 holes (83) at The Links at Summerly (Lake Elsinore, CA) where I also shot my lowest 9 hole score (39). I expected to bring my best performance for varsity tryouts in August, however, I hit a rough spot in my game, shot 51, 47, 45, and settled for the 6th spot on the team. Of course, I was disappointed in myself, but I knew that I could play much better than my tryout rounds. I turned everything around within the first couple weeks of our season, and by the time CIF came around in October, I was averaging a solid 44 (four strokes less than the prior season), and had moved my way up to claim the 4th position on the Varsity team. I even shot my lowest 9-hole score of a 38 at our last home match of the season. During the biggest match of the season against our rivals, the Vista Murrieta Broncos, my score of a 43 was the ultimate determining factor, leading us to win the match by 1 stroke, 199-200, and share the title of Co- League Champions! That was a huge accomplishment for me and I was proud to see that my hard work and dedication was beginning to pay off.

For this upcoming season of my senior year, I have high standards for myself and faith in my game that I will be able to fill the second or maybe even first position on the team, since we just graduated 3 of our starters. During my VJGA season this year I have already dropped my average two strokes to an 85, and just recently broke 80 for the first time with an impressive score of 75 at Dos Lagos Golf Course in Corona, CA. As we all know, consistency and accuracy are key in the game of golf, and if I keep focused on those two aspects, I know my game will be stellar!

Although golf is one of my main priorities, academics always come first. I am, and have always been, a dedicated, hardworking student. Since freshman year, I have maintained an average GPA of 4.2 and have taken 4 AP classes and tests. My junior year was the first year I was recognized as a fully enrolled participant of the International Baccalaureate Programme, a demanding two-year course designed to challenge students and provide them with a rigorous, high quality education. I am proud to say that I fought through the rigor and ended the toughest year of my high school education with a 4.6 GPA.

I have also been a participant in the California Scholastic Federation (CSF) since my freshman year, and have received almost 200 community service hours from this club alone. I will also be participating in the Peer Leaders club on campus during my senior year, whose goal is to break down the social barriers on campus and create a more welcoming, friendly and safe environment for all students.

I am interested in schools, big or small, that will provide me with the opportunity to further advance my education at a college level, as well as an opportunity to participate in their women’s golf program. I am an athlete at heart, with a competitive edge, admiring leadership qualities, and an outgoing personality. I have also learned to become more open to new opportunities and discover more about myself, and what I have to offer. As my scores continue to decrease and improve even more, I am positive that I will make a great addition to any golf team.
