Personal Statement
I’ve been told that I have a natural talent for playing golf. I don’t really know what that means, but I’ll take the complement. I work with my club coach weekly to improve my game. My drive is strong with an average distance of 230 yards. My mid game and putting are decent and I am working to improve my score each time I play. My physical game is progressing well and I am able to improve with continued experience.
However, what intrigues me the most about the game of the golf is the mental game. I am continually learning how to focus and concentrate so that I can play my best physical game. I learned during the high school varsity season that there are so many mental factors that influence the game. My goal for summer season is to improve my mental stamina, and to learn to focus my attention on my game without distractions. I am scheduled to play my club course several times weekly over the summer as well as play several tournaments in order to improve my physical and mental game.
College golf will provide me with the means to sharpen my game and to learn skills at a new level. I am excited and motivated to be able to work with skilled coaches and to be part of a dedicated and winning team while continuing my academic pursuits.
During my high school experience, I have been able to participate each year in several sports including basketball, volleyball, swimming and golf. While in varsity swimming we took first last year and second this year in league championships. I qualified and swam in State championships both years. My golf team was first in league championship for the past two years. This year as a sophomore, our team had the best league score and personally I took second place overall. State Championships were not played in Colorado due to snow. Next year my plan is to concentrate my efforts on golf and swimming as well as cross training and weight training to improve my strength, flexibility and agility.
Academics are very important to me and I have been able to work hard and keep a 3.97 GPA during high school. My school does not have an IB program or advanced study courses, however I am able to begin college courses during high school once by core requisites have been completed. My plan is to complete all core classes during my junior year so that I can attend local college courses during my senior year.
Community is also important to me. For the past 5 years I have been a member of the local chapter of the National Charity League (serving as president, vice-president and secretary) contributing over 95 volunteer hours per year. For the past 7 years I participated in and completed the Jon D. Williams cotillion program. Another of my passions is playing concert harp (8 years), piano, guitar and voice in my community. I recently cut my first CD of harp music selections this year.
I have grown up playing golf with my parents and 3 siblings. We have traveled to every US state other than Alaska and 22 countries, often playing golf in beautiful and exotic places during family vacations. I have been competing most of my life not only in golf, but in robotics, chess, ice skating, tennis, voice as well as high school volley ball, basketball and swimming. I call Colorado Springs Country Club my golf home and have been coached by the golf pro Ty Thompson for the past 10 years. I had the opportunity to caddy for the US Women’s Open held at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs in 2012 and met some of the best women golfer, which was such an inspiration for me. In fact I will be working as a caddy at the Broadmoor Golf club this summer.
I am looking forward to working hard during my junior and senior years both in golf and in academics so that I will be well prepared for the opportunities I will encounter as I enter college.
