Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Tori Bien. I live in Hollywood, Florida, which is centrally located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami in Broward County.
I'm currently in my Senior year at University School of Nova Southeastern, a college preparatory high school located on the college campus in Davie, Florida. My cumulative unweighted GPA last year was 3.51. I'm academically strong and have learned how to manage my time between school and golf. At this time I'm enrolled in all honors and two AP classes. I speak both English and Spanish and I'm currently studying my sixth year of Mandarin. I have also been involved with speech and debate and currently serve as the President of " New to You" an organization made up of approximately 30-40 students school wide which serve as liaisons for all new incoming students to allow a smooth transition into their new school environment.
My goal is to attend a college where I can continue my education, enjoy the experience of playing competitive team golf, and contribute as a person to both the school and its athletic program. I can't wait for the opportunity to display my passion for the game while playing successfully at the collegiate level.
What I believe makes me different from others is that I have an incredible drive every day to improve as a person and a golfer. I’m a very good listener who picks things up quickly, both of which help me academically and on the golf course. I also have a sense of reality and understand my capabilities level of play. I'm interested in the right fit and continue to work hard and stay focused on improving in an attempt to achieve my goals.
Athletically I'm a strong. I have participated in various sports besides golf, to include football, softball, and track. In addition to my golf, I box and run for endurance training. I strength train 3-5 times a week and add stretching to my routine as part of my training and overall health.
Golf is my game. I’ve been successfully playing junior tournaments year round for ten years and been a member of our boys high school team the last five. Also, I have competed as an individual in various high school girls events to include the Florida State High School Championship twice. I believe the opportunity to compete against and with the boys have helped me develop a mental toughness over other competitors. This summer I continued to travel outside Florida when possible to play and compete on different course conditions. My game is continually improving and developing consistency. I made a minor swing change last year which has set my national ranking be back a bit. I felt the needed change should happen now to allow me time to be back on track prior to completion of high school. I have seen the improvements in distance off the tee and I continue to work on my deficiencies in the transition. I expect to be competing at even a higher level as I approach my grad year of 2020. I’m confident that I will be a top competitor and exceptional teammate and student to whatever program I have the opportunity to represent.
