Personal Statement

I realize I am a little late in the recruiting process because I did not start playing golf until my freshman year. I joined the team after my small private school asked for volunteers to fill out the boy’s roster. I soon found that playing on a team in a competitive environment led to a greater understanding and love of the game. The summer after my freshman year I practiced almost daily and as I improved, I started to believe that if I continued to practice I may be able to play in college. Although I loved my private school, after a discussion with my parents I decided that to further my golf game, I needed to transfer to a larger public school that could provide better coaching, practice facilities, and competition. I knew transferring midterm would be difficult academically and socially but I wanted to improve my golf game. Today I practice at least 4 times a week during the school year, play every weekend, and take weekly golf instruction at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center on St. Simons Island. Changing schools was a tough decision but I know it was the right one. I learned that not only am I willing to make the hard decisions to get better but that I can actually handle the pressure. Also, I was able to maintain my 4.0 GPA. This year I shot my best score ever (75) at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour 3rd Annual Hurricane Cup after being invited as a last minute replacement. I placed 3rd out of 19 beating several girls who had already signed college scholarships. This accomplishment has just motivated me to practice even more.

As far as my collegiate goals and aspirations, I want to play college golf eventually earning the #1 spot and contributing to team conference and national titles while at the same time pursuing a degree. I am not sure what I want to study because I am interested in many things. I played basketball, softball, and volleyball and really like team sports but nothing gives me the feeling golf does. Every mistake or great shot is on me and no-one else. I like that my performance in golf is not based on my size or weight but is really due to my determination, discipline, and commitment. Actually, I just love to play.

I hope I do not sound conceited because I am not. I am just confident in my ability to improve. I am learning how to win and hate to lose but thanks to my golf coach I am learning that figuring out why you lost is very important. Now when I lose it just motivates me to work harder to get better. I am also motivated by my teammates and hope I motivate them also. I think that’s an important part of being on a team and I just want my team to win and contribute the best I can. I love my current high school teammates and willingly take and share pointers when it comes to golf and in school. I am hoping to find that same competitive spirit and friendship on a college team. I know I will be a great addition to any team and school.
