Personal Statement
I am Kiley Phares. I am currently going to Stevens High School in Rapid City, South Dakota. This year, I was a junior and will be graduating in 2015. I am interested in an opportunity to play college golf and would love to see if you were still looking for players to fill your roster and your team for the fall of 2015. I do not have a particular major selected at this time. However, I am an excellent student with a grade point average of 3.67 and I am a member of the National Honors Society.
I would like to share a little history about my family. My father, Scott Phares, played NAIA college golf at Northern State University qualifying in two national tournaments. He also placed in the top ten at the Men’s State Amateur Tournament. He is currently an elementary school principal. My mother, Tari Phares, played NAIA college basketball at Chadron State College on a full ride scholarship. She currently teaches elementary PE. They both work for the Rapid City Public School District.
Kelly Rothberg, former University of Florida Assistant Coach and Louisville Head Women’s Golf Coach is a good family friend. From our area, Meghan Little-Farmer from Sturgis, South Dakota was recruited to play on Coach K’s Louisville team and made a huge impact after giving the opportunity to red shirt and adjust to college golf from South Dakota golf. Another, golfer is Halie Piper from Watertown South Dakota who once again Coach K helped advise and after choosing Boise State was able to understand how to transition as a freshman and listen and learn to be ready for college golf. My sophomore year, I had the opportunity to compete against Hallie Getz who now plays for South Dakota State University. I did beat her. With this, I do know we have help and history from South Dakota golfers coming into programs and making an impact due to our foundation.
I play in the # 1 position for Stevens High School golf team. I've been playing on varsity since 7th grade. While playing for them, as a sophomore, I took first place shooting an 83 ( 44 ,39) at Meadowbrook golf Course in Rapid City, South Dakota. This was my first win, where I also beat Hallie Getz. Our sophomore year, GDC I shot an 86 taking 4th and achieving an All Conference title. That summer, I played in the summer Big Eye College Preview Tournament and the format was a two-day tournament where I shot an 82 at Bakker Crossing and an 81 at Prairie Green, both courses located in Sioux Fall South Dakota. My current tournament handicap is a 10.2 index as of the summer 2013.
This past Spring in my Junior High School year in 2014: I still play number one. I won our city tournament shooting a 162 playing four courses 9 holes at each. Then went onto the State Big Schools AA Tournament May 19th,and 20th. I shot an 81,78=159. This earned me 7th place out of 110 girls. My handicap is now at a 9 based on all tournament scores from High School and summer for July 2014.
The strength of my golf game is my short game and my attitude. I am working hard on improving my swing and getting more distance and accuracy with my long game. I score with my chipping and putting. I consistently hit the ball down the fairway off the tee. I am working on hitting more greens and getting closer to the hole. I play the game of golf keeping my emotions under control and maintaining a positive attitude.
I do realize my scores might be high for what you might be recruiting, however, the history of South Dakota players are to have forward success due to our hard work, leadership and positive attitude that seems to be built into our golf games. I am willing to work hard and know that I am a successful student as well as an athlete.
I would love the opportunity to play college golf and can get you any information you might need for any further recruiting. Some personal references that can attests to my character and golfing abilities are:
