Personal Statement
When I was very young, I was diagnosed with a speech problem. It followed me as I entered elementary school and ultimately kept me from a lot of social interaction. Although my speech improved enough by 2nd grade to stop going to a specialist, it left me a little in the "unsocial" category. However, I found playing sports was an outlet where I didn't have to talk (too much). Since that very young age, I have let my actions on the field, court, and mat speak volumes for me. I enjoy the experience and challenge of trying new positions and even new sports (After only 2 years of wrestling, I placed 3rd at a National Tournament in Texas).
Ice hockey is relatively new to me- as cost was a big hurdle for my family. After only 2 seasons of playing hockey (forward), I was asked by a neighboring town to play hockey for their school. I became the starting JV goalie as a freshman and fell in love. My eye-hand coordination, experience playing soccer goalie and my competitiveness have driven me to get better every time I'm on the ice. I have yet to pin point exactly what I want to study after high school, but I have narrowed it down to 3 potential areas- athletic training, criminology and gerontology. As I look to schools that offer these programs, I want to use my athletic ability (and improving GPA) to help pay for my college degree.
