Personal Statement

Hello my name is Madison Davis and I am a 17 year old Senior at Mankato East high school. I have loved playing hockey since I took my first skating lesson at  6 years old. Since then I have surrounded myself in everything that is hockey. This year was my 3rd year playing high school hockey.  I was chosen for the USA Hockey Development Camps, HP Final 54 teams and have played in the Elite Tier 1 Upper Midwest High School League this fall.

My personal goal in life is to play college hockey and get a degree in Nursing . I want to take my commitment and love of  hockey to the next level and play the game as long as I can.

I am a hard worker and I will do whatever it takes to improve my game. I weight train, I have a personal coach to help improve my hands / Stick handling  and skate in every camp my parents can afford to put in me. What sets me apart from others is my ability to apply what I am learning from coaches and other players and the drive and compassion to master it.  I love playing hockey so much and nothing else really matters when I step on the ice.

  • "I just wanted to relay how great it has been to work with your daughter this summer! East is lucky to have her next year. Madison will be a force to "reckon" with as she is "flying" around on the ice making those moves on players. Her drive and energy surpasses the "energizer bunny" whether on the ice or in dry land. Honestly, In my ten year's of coaching girls hockey she has something special and as she continues on this pace, in my opinion, she will have the option to play at the highest levels of College hockey. I have come to see many talented and gifted players but not all possess what Madison has. She is a player that possesses the most critical element! She always has a smile on her face and I can see/feel the love/respect she has for the game of hockey when Istep on the ice with her. This is a quality that is hard tofind!!! She goes 110% percent on every drill!!! Thanks for your support of Surge and its goals of improving Southern MN girls hockey." Thomas D. Villagomez Mankato West High School Head Girls Hockey Coach ------------------------------"She is becoming a really good hockey player and has a great attitude/personality. I/we have enjoyed watching her develop and look forward to continuing her development. I really enjoyed having her- she has a great personality and is a very good skater/player for her age. I noticed a lot of improvement in her during the camp and she made me/us all laugh a lot :). She seems to have a great perspective on things and look forward to working with her in the future. Kraig Gregor St. Peter/Le Sueur Girls Bulldogs Assistant Coach 1999-2006, New Prague Hockey Association (Mite, Squirt, Peewee and Bantam) Head Coach 2007-2014, Surge Summer and Fall 2014-2015

  • " Madison Davis is an outstanding human being. Her attention to detail is what sets her above others her age. I have had the pleasure of working with Madison on her hockey game. We have been working on turning her into a well rounded hockey player in the areas of skating, shooting and having good character. She is a hard worker who continues to grow as a person and a hockey player everytime we work together. Madison’s number one attribute is that she is coachable. What I mean by coachable is that when I am training with her, and offer a suggestion on a skill, she will immediately implement the suggestion. She has a phenomenal understanding of what it takes to get better at the sport she loves. Madison is the type of person who will do whatever it takes to accomplish her goals and get to the next level not only in hockey, but as a student-athlete as well. "

  • I was approached by Sara Davis looking for somebody to train her 10 year old daughter Madison in hockey the summer of 2011. I had just finished my freshman year of college at Minnesota State University-Mankato where I was playing on the Maverick women’s hockey team. I was busy that summer: working every day and training for my next hockey season, but decided to work with Madison. It was one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. From day one Madison showed up early and ready to take on the challenges I had prepared for her. I recall walking out of our first session thinking “This is not a typical ten year old.” It was clear she was naturally talented, but more importantly she was and is hardworking and coachable. I couldn’t wait to keep helping her develop. I put together fun plans based off of the on and off ice training that helped me compete and a high level at that age and she would excel above and beyond anything I put in front of her. I had the privilege to see the development Madison made from 2011 until 2014 when I graduated. We worked one on one and in a team setting. Men’s and Women’s hockey players coached the annual Maverick summer camp in Mankato as well as weekly 3 on 3 games in the spring. What I love most about Madison is her compete level, coach ability (growth mindset), but most importantly her passion for the game of hockey. At the Maverick camps and 3on3 spring development, players ranged in ages, sizes, skill level, and included boys and girls. Madison would be the first on the ice excited to play. She had no fear competing against anybody no matter the gender, how big, or how talented they were. She was smaller than a lot of the players, but pushed herself to compete at a high level with those who were the best players there. She played big, tough, and fast never using her size as an excuse. In my current career I work in recruiting and selecting college students for an elite internship program. My biggest learning through seeing people succeed and fail is that having a growth mindset and coach ability is more important than any skill or natural ability. These are two of Madison’s biggest strengths. Madison has an incredible ability to accept constructive feedback and push herself harder the next time. While coaching her at the Maverick camps I would challenge her to shoot harder and work on that off the ice, next thing you know there is a shooting tarp in her garage and she is out there daily (even losing a tooth in street hockey at one point-that’s another story). Finally, the awesome thing I see in Madison is how much she loves the game and attracts those around her. For a positive team “culture player”-Madison is the definition of that. From the minute she walks in the rink, her eyes light up like a kid on Christmas. She is consistently positively encouraging the players around her and I firmly believe and have seen that she helps those around her get better. She sets an example of work ethic that is contagious. Even when she gets frustrated, it seems to fuel her fire and launch her into a faster gear. I would go to her games after my college career was over and as a spectator see a smile on her face the entire time she is playing which is what this great sport is about. I am so glad I said “Yes” to Sara in 2011. I thought I was going to be the only one in the relationship teaching, but Madison taught me equally. She inspired me and motivated me to enjoy the game every day and how important it is to invest in an athlete who truly desires to reach their full potential and compete at an elite level and earn each step they take to get there.
