Personal Statement
I’ve loved hockey since the first time I stepped on the ice.
I began playing in a recreational league, and quickly realized I wanted a bigger challenge. I moved through B, BB, A and AA travel teams in Toronto. In 2016 my family moved to Washington State where I joined the Washington Wild U19 team, and at age 15 I was made the youngest Alternate Captain the team has ever had.
This year, as a junior, I was promoted to Captain - again the youngest in the team’s history.
I’ve always dreamed of playing college hockey, and my sights are firmly fixed on my goal. I’m on the ice with the team at least four times a week, I train in the gym with the team twice a week, and weight train and run or cycle at home several times a week. I work privately with a coach to work on the finer points of shooting, passing, stick handling and skating. Ever year I’ve seen huge improvements in my game.
I love being a leader on and off the ice. I help set team goals, as well as individual long and short term goals for my team mates. I love cheering them on, pushing them, and celebrating with them. As for opponents, they know they have to go through me to get to my teammates.
Although I’m relatively small, I’m strong, and I love using my strength and playing physically. I’m very strong on the puck, and I drive hard to the net. I can score from almost anywhere in the offensive zone, but I excel in setting up goals: I get more assists than anyone on the team. I’m a strong shot blocker - and often take advantage by turning the play around - and an excellent penalty killer. I’m also often on the power play.
Moving to Washington was a challenge, since the curriculum is different here than in Toronto, where I went to school in French. In spite of that, I had a 3.64 G.P.A. and took three A.P. courses (World History, English, and Pre-Calculus). This year I expect my G.P.A. will be higher, and I am taking four A.P. courses (English, U.S. History, Chemistry and Calculus).
In college I hope to study Business, Law or Psychology. I want a college that offers both academic excellence and athletic challenge. I’m willing to work as hard as I can to get there.
