Personal Statement
“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
This quote represents the dedication that I put into everything I commit to. In order to be successful, it requires the willpower to get back up after failing. I believe it is vital to continually learn and improve.
Hello Coaches,
My name is Cassandra Jane Diaz, and I am a Junior at Carmel Catholic High School, a college preparatory school, in Mundelein, Illinois. I have played basketball, golf, and lacrosse throughout my years in high school. I have been playing lacrosse for three years now. Originally, I played defensive wing for two years, but this year I am the varsity goalie. For my upcoming school year, I will focus on developing my goalie skills for lacrosse by attending various summer camps and playing for a club team.
Academically, I have a 3.66 cumulative GPA, which includes honors english, math, history, and science courses. I will be taking AP Economics, AP Psychology, and AP Government my Senior year. I had a rough academic transition from upper college prep courses for math and science courses to honors level courses. However, I have learned to work through that experience and I have shown improvement. I have always believed that academics are important part of school. As a result, I am a member of National Honor Society, National Business Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the National Society of High School Scholars.
As for my extracurricular activities, I have participated in OUCH (Opportunities in Understanding Careers in Healthcare) Club, Diversity Club, Ambassador’s Club, Junior Leadership Team, Student Council, Yearbook (Editor), Advancement Service Club, and Service Leadership Club. For my Freshman and Sophomore school years alone, I have completed over 80 hours of community service. As a Junior, I have completed over 60 hours of community service this year. I enjoy serving others in the community, so I have participated in a week long service trip in Philadelphia, PA through Catholic Heart Work Camp. By combining my passion for sports and service, I have been a youth basketball and youth lacrosse coach for the past several years. In addition, I volunteered with GLASA, Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, and spent a week assisting at a sports camp for physically disabled children.
In addition to being a student-athlete, I am also a United States Naval Sea Cadet; I participate in monthly drills at the Great Lakes Naval Base learning about military history, participating in teamwork and leadership activities, and serving the community. Through my experience as a Sea Cadet, my respect for the military has grown and I have developed my teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills, all skills that I bring to daily life.
All of these activities continue to help me learn time management and responsibility. They have allowed me to grow as a person and become a well-rounded individual.
Because of my passion for business, I am seeking a college with a strong business program that will provide academic challenges and opportunities for me to continue my education and prepare for graduate school. As a member of a second generation immigrant family with parents from the Philippines, I will be the first in my family to attend college in America. Whatever decision I make in regards to college and a sports program, I want to make my parents and family proud. I wish to be the inspiration for my relatives following in my footsteps. I hope to find the school that is the best fit for me where I can take my enthusiasm and passion for involvement and contribute to the school on not only the lacrosse field, but also through participating in service and philanthropies, so that I can grow as a person while working towards my future career in business. I believe that I have the work ethic and academic and athletic ability needed to be part of your program.
