Growing up I played any sport I could - softball, basketball, soccer. There was never a day I wasn't outside, biking miles away with friends, hiking until my feet hurt, or just throwing a ball around and chasing after it. Life was so simple and the biggest problem was having to go inside for dinner. "The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness." - John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club.
The day I found lacrosse, I knew what MY sport was. Starting out playing midfield I found a passion for running. The second game I played, there was no goalie, so I stepped up and fell more in love. That game we crushed the other team and won - I must have blocked over 10 shots! The season was only three or four games in when I was invited to join a travel team for the summer.
For me there is no off-season. You won't find someone with more heart than me because I'm dedicated and can't imagine life without lacrosse. I don't train to lose. I play high school lacrosse in spring, club lacrosse in summer and fall, and a winter indoor league.
During my freshman year, I had a slow start to academics. Nothing was more important than lacrosse. But I have learned that the "student" in "student-athlete" is first for a reason. I currently have a 3.0 GPA, and I'm working hard to raise it before I start applying to colleges. Sports medicine and environmental studies are areas I would like to explore in college. My favorite classes have always been science and health related subjects.
When not playing lacrosse, I enjoy running, rugby, fight conditioning and weight training, and volunteer work. St. Mary's Ryken requires each student do a minimum number of volunteer hours each year. At first, I did it to meet the requirement, but then I realized there is a lot of personal satisfaction in volunteer work, so now I'm a regular at our local soup kitchen and food pantry.
