I am a 5’6” and 120 pound midfielder and attack lacrosse player from Toms River, New Jersey. I started playing for the T3 Elite Shore 2017 team in 2011 and I continue to play for the same select team. I am currently a senior at Donovan Catholic High School. I transferred from Toms River High School North. I earned a starting varsity position on Toms River High School North's lacrosse team as a freshman. I earned 18 goals, 5 assists and 15 ground balls with limited playing time due to the evenly distributed playing time shared with 15 seniors on the roster. I also played varsity field hockey as a freshman and a sophomore earning two varsity letters in field hockey. Due to NJSIAA rules when I transferred from Toms RIver High School North to Donovan Catholic High School as a varsity player I was required to sit the bench for half of my season; therefore; my lacrosse statistics this past season are minimal. This was a decision I had to make upon transferring for a more challenging academic caseload and a "community" environment.
Academics are my priority. I am enrolled in full honors and AP courses. My current GPA is a 100.25 and my class rank is 15 out of 176. I was also invited into the National Honor Society for my junior year. My philosophy on life is I truly believe there is only one chance in life to achieve certain goals. I also feel many teenagers do not realize how important these years are academically, athletically and socially. I believe every time I write my name on my paper, project, homework assignment, test and what comes after my name will represent “me” Madison Hughes. I put 100% effort into every assignment I receive whether it is big or small because they are all building blocks to my future. I demonstrate excellent time management with my school work and two varsity sports and clubs. I am extremely competitive with my grades and I set standards for myself that I do not want to fall below. I was nominated by my guidance counselor March, 2014 to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum for Careers in Medicine in the summer of 2014. I earned my third varsity letter as a freshman in academics.
I carry these same academic ideas onto the lacrosse field. I work extremely hard to be the best lacrosse player on and off the field. I am respectful to the referees, coaches and my teammates because again, my actions are a true reflection on “me” Madison Hughes. I understand this is a team sport and the main goal is to play my hardest and make the smartest decisions on the field to help bring success to the team.
I attended a large public high school my freshman year with a student population of 2,400 and I transferred my sophomore year to a catholic high school with a student population of 700. I feel both environments have their pros and cons. Therefore, I am currently researching colleges of interest ranging from rural to urban, small to large and private and public. I want to be a part of a university that has a balance with academics and athletics in a “college town” atmosphere. I attended a large high school my freshman year and I loved to attend and support all of the athletic teams and events my high school had to offer. All the athletes in my high school supported the other athletes by attending games and making signs to cheer other athletes on. Now I attend a small private high school where sports are important, however, academics is the priority. I also love the environment of a private catholic high school. This environment promotes religion, morals and holds the students to a professional standard during school hours and school functions. I hope to be able to find a university with a strong academic and athletic balance.
