At 5'4" and 100 pounds, it's easy to look at me and think that I am a typical coxswain. I'd like to think of myself, however, as anything but typical. During the summer of 2016, after my novice rowing season, I joined my club fastpitch softball team, something I had done since I was 7 years old. Although I was the smallest player on the team, I was voted team captain by my teammates, and played nearly every game as the team's starting catcher and leadoff hitter. To me, a captain makes everyone around her better, brings the best out of her teammates, and holds herself as accountable as she holds her teammates. Our softball Coach, "Pav" as he likes to be called, describes me as relentless, tenacious, a competitor, an athlete.
I see the role of a coxswain very much like that of a softball catcher, leadoff hitter, and team captain. On the diamond, my teammates relied upon me to control the tempo of the game, and to lead us both offensively and defensively. My goal is to help bring tenacity and accountability to the team. If I am fortunate enough to be asked to be part of a great university, the rowing team I join will flat out compete. Every class, every practice, every race. I will see to it. So yes, at 100 pounds, I am a typical coxswain in stature. But more than that, I am an athlete.
