Dear Coaches,
My interest in rowing is unlike any other you will come across. My hometown is Munster, IN which is located in the NW part of the state. I do not have access to water and have limited access to any team. I work alone on my erg with only my drive and remote coaching with Xeno Muller. This is what makes me different from the rest.
I got into rowing because of three major events: The first event occurred over breakfast on a Sunday morning. My mom made me read an article in the Chicago Tribune about a new rowing club that was an outreach program for inner-city youth. The article talked about the benefits of rowing, both the physical and mental. The article also talked about the connectivity the sport had with job placement. This really resonated with me because I see so many college grads that haven't landed a job.
The second event happened a few weeks later at the public library. There I saw a book on the "best seller" shelf which grabbed my attention. The Boys in the Boat conjured up images of an elite college sports team. That is definitely something I want to be a part of.
The final event took place a couple weeks after the library incident. I was fortunate to be profiled in my school paper for making the varsity cross-country team as a freshman. Right next to my picture was another picture profiling a senior named Barb who rowed for a team in Chicago and had plans to row in college. I reached out to Barb to find out the path she took to pursue college rowing. After hearing about Barb's journey, I was all in. All of these signs were no coincidence. I contacted the coach from the Chicago Tribune article and began my own rowing journey.
Xeno has helped perfect my erging technique and re-emphasize the importance of discipline and time-management with college rowing.
My name is Mallory Grim, a rower from Munster, Indiana. I work extremely hard at EVERYTHING I do - academics (3.88/4.0 GPA), sports, and life. If given the opportunity to come to your school, I will do whatever it takes to succeed. You won't be disappointed.
Regards,
Mallory Grim
