Personal Statement

Hallo

To give a little background information, I’m a student from South Africa who decided to come to the USA after finishing high school and not being sure about what I wanted my future to look like. I decided to partake in a culture exchange program and am currently reciding in the USA as an Aupair. I did a vast number of sports throughout my high school career but never found the one sport that truly set my soul on fire! I was lucky enough to experience so many new things in my time living in the USA but the best experience was finding a sport that I loved!

It all started in the summer of 2018 on the chicago river when a friend invited me to their in-house regatta and learn to row programs running that day at Chicago rowing foundations after seeing me row on the erg at our local gym! I participated that day and met with the team manager who asked if I would join them for the fall and winter training! And that’s where it all started for me!

I immediately started training 2-3times a week on the erg trying to refine my technique and learn the dynamics of rowing! I formally started training under my coach steve dani in October 2018 and have been consistently working on the erg to improve my times and technique! I have made incredible progress in such a short time and my love for the sport grows daily!

I’m obviously a novice rower with limited to no experience on the open water but pride myself on being a hard-working and determined person with the ability to adapt very quickly and learn the skills needed to succeed! I have faced adversity with resilience! being completely alone in the USA with no family support for 1.5years has probably been one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in my life but have truly just embraced this experience. I have learned that you can do anything you put your mind to if you are willing to work hard! And that you should never let anyone dictate your dreams,no matter how crazy they might seem!

In my time in the USA i’ve been working a full-time job as an Aupair which is 45hours a week, did a college class and other credits towards a total of 6credit hours and had to relearn math from my native language of Afrikaans in English to take the SAT’s, all working towards achieving my Biggest Dream ever, To become an collegiate Rower and have the opportunity to get a degree in the USA and hopefully become a knowledgeable millennial who can one day make a difference for other people in the world even if it is just words of encouragement to chase whatever crazy dream they might have in their hearts!

I’ve given you some insight into my character but probably my most valueable attribute to any team is that I live to serve others in everything that i do! I have always loved team sport because your actions determines your teams actions and has a whole outcome! Meaning to me that small things together can make a huge difference! Rowing as a sport is probably the most beautiful representation of what it means to be on a team because when you’re rowing in that boat and you feel like giving up even for a second it’ll show in your movement and could change the whole boats dinamic, so who are you to give up when all your teammates are doing their best towards this perfect working machine! due to this specific character trait I believe that i would be a great addition to any team because I would always put the team first!

Thank you for taking the time to read this!
