Please let me introduce myself as Sonya Mehta (2005 born) a 2023 graduate. My goal over the next few years is to commit and play at a high-quality varsity soccer program along with receiving an excellent education. During or after college if I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play professional soccer and/or play for the Canadian national team, this would fulfill one of my life goals. While not fully defined, my career aspirations at the present time are to eventually work in the fields of health care or business. I strongly value qualities such as work ethic, integrity, and mutual respect. All of my various coaches who I have played for on my local team, provincial teams and at national combines, have consistently describe me as a tenacious, intelligent, versatile, and a highly coachable player who is a leader and great teammate. I am a person who will support my teammates and always have their backs on and off the field.
What differentiates me from my peers is my creativity, my ability to see the whole pitch, my first touch and my intensity of commitment to training whether individually or as a team. While I am most comfortable playing possession style soccer, I have demonstrated that I can adapt to many styles of play and positions on the field. I am hungry to learn new things and capitalize any opportunity afforded to me to study the game, including enrolling in a coaching course through school and referee courses. I have been fortunate to compete in soccer with my club team at both provincial and international competitions in the US and Europe and these experiences have further fueled my passion for the game, which continues to grow exponentially.
I am committed to continuously improving myself and I do significant extra work on and off the pitch in addition to my team training. i was fortunate to be identified to enter the Canada Soccer Alberta Regional Excellence program as an underage and this was one of the most critical opportunities I have been given. I was afforded the opportunity to train and compete with older, more skilled players and to participate in Whitecaps FC combines and an invitational evaluation camp for the Girls Elite Whitecaps FC Vancouver training program.
I am now a full time player in the Whitecaps Girls Elite residency training program.
In addition to soccer, I have played multiple other sports, including competitive tennis since the age of seven years old. Playing an individual sport has provided me with many skills that are beneficial on the soccer pitch including remaining calm in high pressure games, personal accountability and how to persevere and fight to get the win. I am a highly committed student and strive to learn and excel in the full range of my studies which has resulted in exceptional academic performance and awards, such as being the IB award recipient (academics, athletics and interpersonal relationships) for my school. When not engaged in school or sport, I like strumming the guitar and visiting my parents and twin brother, my friends and my two dogs.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about me as a person and a player.
