Personal Statement
An event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood was the ending of my parent’s marriage. As I reflect on this personal experience, I realized that their separation meant the loss of a stable and nurturing family unit. The abrupt change triggered feelings of sadness, anger, and despair. As the oldest child, I also felt a responsibility for protecting and shielding my younger brother from the grief and uncertainty brought upon by their separation. Furthermore, I felt the pressure of unwanted household chores while concentrating on my studies and sports. My family learned to live on one income and give up many comforts.
As I gradually adapted to this change, I understood that my parents had ended their marriage, not our family. I would always have their unconditional love. I sought their comfort and support to help me cope and persevere. I recognized that my parents have always been my roles models. I took for granted the sheltered lifestyle they had provided my brother and me without taking into consideration the hardship they endured as immigrants. My parents fled their country due to poverty and war. I admired their strength and ability to persevere in the midst of adversity. Their strength inspired me to cope and persevere.
Enduring my parents’ separation, was devastating, however, through the pain I found a strength within me that forced me to rise above, to focus my energy on my education and beloved sport. An inner power that motivated me to pursue my goals and dreams despite life’s hardships. Moving through life even though there was a lot of pain was difficult, but it was something that made me stronger and helped me prepare for future obstacles. Life can be painful and bleak, but the most important thing is how you persist and carry on.
