Personal Statement
Boy to a man, and a girl to a woman. A little act of kindness or a little community service can be your first step to adulthood. I attend the Mormon church and in our belief the young women in our church ages 12-18 have the opportunity to complete something called their Personal Progress book. This book contains of tasks to complete, and in completing them your growth begins. Think of Hercules; most everyone knows the story of Hercules and how he was given 12 different labors to accomplish. All individual tasks having to be done only by him and being able to help him in many ways in strength and mind. That’s similar to the idea of Personal Progress, I had to do multiple individual tasks under different topics each having their own effect on my life. Each task is known as a goal and every goal had a certain amount of requirements in order for it to be fully marked of as a completed task.
Out of the many ones I had to do the one that really stuck out to me was a task that had been under the topic of Integrity. The task was to look into talk given by General Authorities, and to research the topics of integrity and honesty. To learn why these principles are critical to my happiness. I had to create an object, in which my case I created a book of quotes, that will remind me each day of my commitment to be honest and true at all times and known for my personal integrity.
A young mother of six children was left without a husband. The oldest child was twelve, the youngest barely two, and one daughter was confined to a wheelchair. This mother moved to a ward that was close to her family and friends. This just so happened to be ours. As she was moving in, ward members streamed in to welcome her, bring food, and offer assistance. She hardly had time to direct those who were unloading the moving van. The family was able to receive multiple acts of love and kindness. Her home teachers repaired her appliances and other household items. Her visiting teachers kept very close and made sure she never had to go alone to a Church activity. Gratefully my family and I had the opportunity to be one of these wonderful hands. In my family we show our integrity by caring and serving others.
The rewards of integrity are immeasurable. One is the indescribable inner peace and serenity that come from knowing we are doing right; another is an absence of the guilt and anxiety that accompany sin. This incident may not be the greatest accomplishment but it has helped me better myself and be who I am. It has helped me to be more caring, thoughtful and realize I can do things to show others what I am capable of.
