Personal Statement
Being a member of the Cheshire YMCA Sea Dog (CDOG) Swim Club has taught me a lot. I have learned how to be a good winner and a good loser. My team has a 'five minute rule'. Following a rough swim, we are given five minutes to reflect and be upset. After all, it is likely that we have another event shortly that we must prepare for. Also, after a great swim, we are given five minutes to celebrate. After all, it is likely that there is a teammate who had a rough swim and may need encouragement. I apply this idea to other areas in my life. Whether it is a test in school or a board game with my family, I realize the importance of being a good sport. Another lesson I have learned from being a CDOG is to not limit myself. Most swimmers ask other swimmers, "What's your stroke?" Well, the CDOG answer to that is, "All of them". You see, throughout my time with the CDOGs, we have always been entered in every event at some time during the season. At first I was very confused when my coach put me in breaststroke events. But, as I continued, I appreciated being exposed to all of the events, and even started liking some of them that I might not have even tried such as the 4 IM. This philosophy has allowed me to keep an open mind. My hope is to swim for a college that is accepting of everyone's successes and defeats. I want to be challenged in the pool and in the classroom and have fun doing it!
