Personal Statement

I am a 5'1" and 110-pound swimmer from Smithfield, Maine. I am currently a senior at Messalonskee High School and will graduate with the Class of 2012. I have been swimming competitively for the Mid-Maine Dolphin club swim team for 10 years, in addition to the varsity high school swim team for the last 4 years. Swimming has always been a part of my life. Many of my closest friends are also swimmers. I look forward to a lifetime of swimming and to developing lifelong friendships while swimming in college. I look forward to working with a college coach to see how he or she can improve my techniques and times.

I am a very dedicated, focused swimmer and am always seeking to improve my skills. I am a team player with a positive attitude. I would love to swim in college because I live for the competition. I have been swimming for so long that I cannot imagine my life without it. When I am in the pool, I feel relaxed and at peace. The pool is my home away from home. Swimming comforts me and allows me to forget about everything else and just focus on swimming. Swimming helps me with time management in all aspects of my life, including my schoolwork.  From swimming, I have learned how commitment and dedication is required to attain my full potential, to never give up and most of all to believe in myself. It energizes me to accomplish everything necessary to achieve my goals. Swimming has taught me how to deal with challenges and adversity and how to accept success along with failure.

I am interested in attending college, preferably in the Northeast, but, I will certainly entertain other locations if provided with the opportunity to swim competitively. I would prefer a medium to large college. I would like focus my undergraduate education in the medical field. I am committed to training vigorously during the 2011-12 year to further develop my skills, while remaining focused on grades.

In addition to swimming, I do enjoy playing softball very much, however, swimming remains my passion. Playing softball during the summer has allowed me to reflect on my previous swim season and plan for my next season's goals. I have also realized while away from the pool for more than a few days, how much I truly love and miss the pool. I plan to continue to work diligently throughout the remainder of high school, focusing on my swim training and education to ensure the pursuit of my dream to swim in college. I look forward to the possibility of participating in your program. I believe that I would be a positive member of your team. Thank you for your time and consideration.
