Personal Statement
Swimming isn't just a sport for me. It is a lifestyle. Year round I can be found in the pool, practicing, competing, coaching, and life guarding. Swimming has helped form the person I have become because it demands endurance, self-motivation, and the constant desire to improve. These qualities have carried over into my academics and extracurricular activities, too.
Many would say that my body and build have contributed to my success as a swimmer; I am long, lean, and broad-shouldered at 5'10", 140 lbs. My fastest stroke is the breaststroke. In 2009 I placed 11th at State in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:10:55 and was named in the Kalamazoo Gazette as Southwest Michigan's top breaststroker for all three divisions. I also competed individually at State in this stroke in 2008 and as part of a medley relay team in 2008 and 2009. Other notable recognition I have received includes making the All-County Swim Team in 2008 and 2009, earning the Coach's Most Positive Attitude Award in 2009, and being recognized as a Scholar Athlete my first three years in high school.
My goals for this coming year are to participate in USA Swimming during the summer, improve all of my times especially my 100 Breast time to 1:06, and to make First Team All State.
I try to balance sports with my academics and hold a 3.8 average grade point average. My classes have included several advanced and AP-level courses as well as four years of French. I am also an officer in our French and Spanish Clubs, serve as a Junior Rotarian, and participate in the high school curriculum council as a student representative. This winter I have been working as a lifeguard at our school pool and coaching the eight and under age group for the Allegan Tigershark Aquatic Club.
I want to go to school in the Midwest particularly in Michigan so that I can stay close to my family. The size of the school doesn't matter to me, just the quality of the education. I would like my course of study to include art/design or history, my favorite subject areas.
My goals as a college swimmer are to continue to improve my skills, to contribute to the success of the team, and to have the opportunity to continue participating in this sport I love so much.
