My athletic career began with competitive gymnastics age three to ten. I also tried and loved hockey, tae kwan do, softball, and basketball, but took an easy pass on soccer and ballet. I added swimming at age 8 and competed in both gymnastics and swim for a couple of years, until I was able to sort out my true passion: swimming. I swam three days per week initially, but pestered my mom daily with the same question, "Why can't I swim every day?" She took the hint and we found a club team and gave up gymnastics and I have never regretted it.
Swimming is part of who I am. People ask, "Why swim in college?" I love the team aspect as well as the individual aspect the sport provides. A college swim program will allow me to meet, train with and compete alongside people who find a similar joy in the sport, and who understand the work and sacrifice it takes, and love and embrace it as I do. I believe I will be able to reach beyond my current abilities with the help of the right coaches, teammates and college swim program.
A consistently positive attitude and a lack of excuses may make me different from other recruits. I feel that being a good teammate means helping those around you focus on the positive, and even in circumstances that seem dire, to help find a way to get tasks accomplished and to always find a way to give the tasks your very best effort. Positivity is infectious and extremely important to a team's identity and success.
My ultimate goal in life is to be of service to others, and I feel I can do this best in the field of medicine. Academic excellence has always been my top priority. I hope to find a program that will challenge me physically, but will also allow me to study a more rigorous academic program. Although I am looking forward to a new community and a new environment, I am thankful for where I am from and where I was raised. My high school's focus is service, not just while in high school, but life-long, and that is a value that I am proud to share.
