Personal Statement
I joined the Boys & Girls Club of Providence swim team when I was eight. Winning my first race and feeling as if I was flying through the water, I knew swimming was the sport for me. Although my favorite events are short distance freestyle and backstroke, on multiple occasions to help my team, I stepped out of my comfort zone and swam the IM and fly. In addition to expanding my events, the Boys and Girls Club aquatics staff has mentored me teaching swim lessons and certified me to lifeguard. I now work 5-10 hours a week lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and coaching the younger kids at practice.
I chose the public college preparatory examination school in Providence because of its rigorous academic program, diverse student body, and opportunity to swim on the school team. Freshman year, my high school swim team was Division III and my sophomore year we moved up to Division II. The summer after my freshman year, my club coach offered me the opportunity to swim long course meets as an unattached swimmer through the USA League. Participating in USA meets and swimming on a more competitive high school team raised my competition level. I’ve overcome the challenge of performing at higher and higher levels while continuing to love the sport. The summer before my junior year I joined Kingfish RI to train and compete on a year round USA Swimming Club. I aim to beak 56 seconds in the 100 free, achieve high honors and show my coaches that I am ready to be team captain. In the longer term, my goal is to swim on a competitive team at an academically rigorous college
