Personal Statement
My name is Keely Hemminger, and I am a rising senior attending Woodgrove High School. I am interested in a college or university with high expectations in both academics and swimming. As my teammates select universities, I realize that there are many excellent opportunities available at all levels. I am interested in the medical field as a career path, particularly as a dermatologist. I really enjoy Math and Science, but also like English and History. I love school in general, every subject interests me and I am very strong in my academics with a 4.49 GPA.
Personality-wise, I tend to be shy. Once you get to know me though, I think you will find that I'm very personable. Even though I'm shy, I love helping people in any way that I can. I found that helping out with the Special Olympics in the last 2 years was very rewarding. Seeing these individuals with disabilities working as hard as I do was inspiring! I have also enjoyed being a captain on my high school's swim team. Part of that responsibility is to help my teammates with skills and race strategies. That has also helped me to be more outgoing.
Swimming is my heart's passion. Since I have been on FISH (my swim team) with my coach, Ray Benecki, I have learned so much and have grown and developed, not just as a swimmer, but as a person as well. With my coach's guidance, being the high school state champ for both the 200 and 500 Free and setting that state record as a freshman has helped me see my potential. This past year, our 4A changed dramatically adding over 15 new schools, and I still placed 3rd in both events. My goal is to become a state champion again in the near future.
I realize that my future is full of opportunities that will be enhanced by attending a university with strong academic and athletic criteria. My goal is to contribute to that school in both areas. I am excited about this future!
