Personal Statement

Personal Statement

I grew up loving the water and then at age 8 I was introduced to competitive swimming.  By age 10 my year round swimming career had begun.  My dedication to this sport has led to many accomplishments including attending to small details so I can shave a few hundredths off my time, to achieving long term goals such as qualifying for Junior Nationals. I have not only grown as a swimmer, but also as a student.  Competitive swimming has shown me the benefits of hard work, dedication, time management, and teamwork.   My coaches, family, and friends have all encouraged me along the way.  As a student-athlete these people have helped to shape me into the person I am today. Growing up with a twin sister and single mother, I have gained perspective on what cooperation and hard work is truly like.  My sister is my best friend, but also my competitor in the pool.  My mother has supported me with her time, efforts and encouragement.

I am dedicated and committed to my sport.  The training discipline required, a strong work ethic, team work, and a positive mindset have prepared me for furthering my swimming career at the collegiate level.  I don’t only show my motivation to excel during a race, but in practice as well. Facing difficulties is something I have encountered both in and out of the pool.  I strive to work through these difficult times with a sense of determination and perseverance. I have learned to go into every race with an “I will” attitude over an “I hope” attitude. Going into my races with a positive and confident mindset is key when it comes to achieving my goal.  Hard work and being a team leader not only benefited me, but also my teammates.  I strive to maintain a positive attitude even when faced with disappointment.  I know the importance of how my actions can influence and help others so we all can move forward as competitive athletes.

Academically speaking, I maintain high standards of achievement reaching my goal of a 3.9 GPA. I challenge myself by taking honors and AP classes to better prepare for future academic work.  Even though I am not certain about a specific career, I have always been a social and outgoing person with many strong leadership qualities.  Although I am currently undecided in my career path, I may seek a business degree which would allow me to work in an environment that utilizes social interaction, collaboration, and teamwork.

Volunteerism is something I hold close in my heart.  It is important to me that I find opportunities to better my community.   I have spent my summers volunteering for FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), in a horse camp program that brought together Christian athletes to spend quality time learning more about themselves, their horse and their faith.  Having gotten my start in the pool through swim lessons, I now lead by example and give back using my time and talent to teach young children not only the joy of being in the water, but also how to be a safe and skilled swimmer.
